Transatlantic Relations during President Obama’s Second Term
with Dr. Frances G. Burwell, Atlantic Council
and Niels Annen, Member of the SPD-Executive Committee.
Moderator: Andreas Cichowicz, Editor-in-Chief of NDR TV
During President Obama’s first term in office, the transatlantic agenda was dominated by the Euro crisis and worries about the economy on both sides of the Atlantic. With the Obama Administration's pivot to Asia and the prominence of domestic issues on the President's agenda, Europe, preoccupied with its own crises, appeared to have become even less relevant as a vital partner for U.S. foreign policy. Just in time for the beginning of Obama’s second term, the economies on both sides of the Atlantic are showing signs of recovery and Europe, even though far from being out of the woods, seems to have put the worst of the Euro crisis behind itself. With John Kerry, President Obama has selected an experienced Senator with a strong transatlantic background as new Secretary of State. After Vice-President Joe Biden highlighted the importance of the transatlantic partnership at the Munich Security Conference, we think that this is a good time to take a closer look at the transatlantic agenda including the proposed transatlantic free trade treaty, Iran’s nuclear program, and the NATO mission in Afghanistan, and evaluate the prospects of the transatlantic partnership during Obama’s second term.
Dr. Frances G. Burwell is an Atlantic Council vice president and director of the Program on Transatlantic Relations at the Atlantic Council.
Niels Annen is a member of the executive committee of the Social Democratic Party of Germany and works in the department of „International Political Analysis“ of the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation.
Andreas Cichowicz is editor-in-chief as well as deputy program director of NDR-TV.
