SUMMARY:Film Screening: Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat
DESCRIPTION:„Jazz and decolonization are entwined in this historical rollercoaster that rewrites the Cold War episode that led musicians Abbey Lincoln and Max Roach to crash the UN Security Council in protest against the murder of Patrice Lumumba“\n\nFebruary is Black History Month\, and to celebrate this occasion\, we are delighted to invite you to a screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat.\n\nJoin us at the Hamburg Abaton Cinema on February 18 at 17:30 for a special screening of the documentary exploring the intersection of jazz\, decolonization\, and Cold War politics.\nSet against the backdrop of the 1960s\, the film delves into the extraordinary events surrounding the assassination of Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba and the fight for African self-determination. Featuring perspectives from Central African Republic women’s rights activist Andrée Blouin\, Irish diplomat Conor Cruise O’Brien\, and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev\, this powerful narrative captures the collision of jazz and geopolitics. Iconic musicians like Louis Armstrong\, Nina Simone\, and Dizzy Gillespie become unintentional players in a story of Cold War espionage\, neo-colonialism\, and resistance. \nThis event is a cooperation between Amerikazentrum Hamburg and the American Women’s Club Hamburg and is kindly sponsored by the Auswärtiges Amt. \nThe event is free of charge. \nPlease register here. \nTickets are provided on a first come\, first serve basis.
