Keller learned to read and write German in Braille. She even considered Germany her “spiritual home.” On May 9\, 1933\, she sent an open letter to the German student body in which she made direct reference to the impending book burning. The Amerikazentrum invites you to talk about her 1912 essay “Why I Became a Socialist” and her work. Kicking off our events is a discussion of Ernest Hemingway on May 23 at 7 p.m. \nErnest Hemingway’s 1929 classic “A Farewell to Arms” (published in German in 1930 as “In Another Country”) is based on his experiences as a volunteer on the Italian front in World War I. The book was banned in Germany in 1919. The anti-war novel was burned and banned in Germany in 1933. The Amerikazentrum invites you to a conversation about Hemingway’s work and its significance with Dr. Sharon Hamilton and Doug Cowie.
