John Nichols has written or co-written 12 books on media and democracy concerns in the United States and internationally. He also writes on these issues as the National Affairs Correspondent for The Nation magazine -- the oldest weekly journal of news and commentary in the United States. Nichols has appeared on Meet The Press, Bill Moyers' Journal and other national television and radio talk shows and is a regular on the BBC, RTE (Irish Radio) and news networks around the world. A co-founder of Free Press, the preeminent media reform group in the United States, he has testified before the US Congress and at United Nations-sponsored events, and he has twice keynoted global conferences of the International Federation of Journalists. He covered the Persian Gulf War and the transition from apartheid to freedom in South Africa; and he has reported from more than 20 countries around the world. Nichols had covered every US presidential election since 1984. He has lectured on media issues at Harvard, Stanford and dozens of other major universities in the U.S. and other countries.

A free and functional system for gathering and disseminating information is so essential to fair elections and the representative democracy that is supposed to extend from them that it is shocking that nation states fail to consider media and democracy issues in conjunction with one another. Yet, for the most part, this is the case. Laws and structures that define media systems are rarely updated in meaningful and comprehensive ways; indeed, to the extent that they are changed at all, it is often in response to commercial pressures rather the social concerns.

This disconnect has reached a crisis stage in the United States, as honest observers from across the political spectrum acknowledge when they discuss examples of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, the role that the 24-hour news cycle played in the rise of Donald Trump and the influence of hyper-ideological and hyper-partisan “fake news” on issues that are discussed and votes that are cast. Yet, for the most part, the discussion focuses on outrage and defensiveness rather than serious assessments and problem solving.
