The hybrid event took place on December 1, 2022, at the State and University Library Hamburg. The focus was on Dr. Henriette J. Runte, who shared her personal story to explore what it means to find a sense of home when growing up and living in different countries and cultures.
Dr. J, as she is known, has roots in Hungary and Romania, grew up in the USA, and has lived in Germany for many years. Following her lecture, she welcomed two distinguished guests: former U.S. Consul General in Northern Germany, Darion Akins, and former Mayor of Bryan, Texas, Andrew Nelson, who joined virtually from the USA. They discussed what it means to feel at home in one or multiple cultures and the benefits of intercultural exchange.
The lecture was both humorous and thought-provoking, highlighting the importance of intercultural understanding for peaceful coexistence. Despite the competing excitement of a German World Cup match, the event drew a large audience, who thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Even after the formal event ended, the discussions continued in smaller groups, reflecting the strong engagement and interest of the attendees.
