Whenever there is talk about the Emancipation Proclamation from 1862 and its aftermath until 1865, the late Abraham Lincoln comes to mind and rightfully so. His work was an important step towards the liberation of enslaved people of both the North and the South, even though it was by no means the end of the struggle. Given Lincoln’s 160th death anniversary this year, we are going to take a look at the importance of Lincoln as a political figure with respect to the liberation of slaves and the winding road that the reception of the famous Executive Order took during the following years.
The scientific researcher at the Heidelberg Center American Studies, Nicole Colaianni and host and cultural manager Gottfried Haufe will give insights into the matter and will try to answer the question why it took another 156 years for congress to recognize June 19th as a federal holiday.
This is an online event and will be held in English.
