Speakers of the Day:
Michael Spikes is a lecturer and director of Teach for Chicago Journalism in the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University. He also is an PhD candidate in the Learning Sciences in Northwestern University’s School of Education and Social Policy. His research focus concerns connecting cognitive, social, and learning environmental design theories to news media literacy education and interventions. Before coming to Northwestern, Michael worked for the Center for News Literacy at Stony Brook University where he developed curriculum and training in news literacy as the director of its Digital Resource Center and Illinois News Literacy & Civic Learning Project. Michael has also held positions as a Media Studies and Production teacher in both public and public charter schools in Washington DC; as a member of the Newseum’s educational advisory team; and as a media producer and editor for numerous organizations including NPR, the PBS NewsHour, and the Kellogg School of Management.
Tony Ganzer has been a writer, award-winning journalist, broadcaster, and international communications professional for nearly 20 years working with media outlets and companies in the U.S. and Europe. He’s a former correspondent for the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, whose journalism work has been featured by NPR, the BBC, Deutsche Welle, Swissinfo, and his own award-winning Faith Full Podcast. His book Kneading Journalism: Essays on baking bread and breaking down the news, was published in 2023. From November 2020, Tony has served as Co-President of the Board of Directors for the Robert Bosch Foundation Alumni Association. In 2021, he was named a “NextGen Leader” by the German Marshall Fund, and is a previous recipient of the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship for young American leaders, and the Arthur F. Burns Fellowship from the International Center for Journalists.
Bryn Stole is a journalist currently living and working in Germany on a Fulbright fellowship. His work has appeared in a number of publications, including the New York Times, Slate and Reuters. Prior to Fulbright, he was a staff reporter for the Baltimore Sun, the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Baton Rouge Advocate and the Greenwood (Miss.) Commonwealth newspapers in the U.S.
Moderator:
David Patrician is an American moderator/journalist currently based in Hamburg, Germany. He came to Germany on a Fulbright Journalism Scholarship and has reported for a variety of media outlets (i.e. Voice of America, Deutsche Welle, N-tv, RTL Nord and the Hamburger Abendblatt). In addition, he has moderated numerous international events and conferences (i.e. the TEDxFulbright in Frankfurt, the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue and the Open Science Conference). From 2012 – 2022, David was the Hamburg regional coordinator for the Fulbright Alumni Association. In 2022, he received the Amerigo Media Award, presented by ENAM (European Network of American Alumni Associations).
