Topic of the Day  “The Role of Journalism in Fact-Checking and Disinformation“

Speakers: 

Madeleine Pollard is a UK-born, Berlin-based journalist and editor who specialises in art and visual culture. She has worked as a fact-checker for the likes of the Financial Times, Monocle 24, ZEIT Germany, and Penguin Random House, and has written for publications including i-D, Dazed, VICE, British Journal of Photography, FT Weekend, Monocle, The Economist and The Independent, among others.

 

 

 

 

Die Journalistin und Autorin Deborah Steinborn, portraitiert am 03.09.2012 in Hamburg.

Deborah Steinborn grew up in New York City. She studied literature, business and German language at Binghamton University and has master’s degrees in journalism and international politics from Columbia University. She was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow in Business Journalism at Columbia; today, she is on the program’s board of directors. Deborah’s German media clients include Die ZEIT. She is editor-in-chief of Zeit Germany, a line of English-language magazines published globally, which she developed for the newspaper group in 2017. She also works for Forbes Magazine on the production of its annual World’s Billionaires ranking.

 

 

 

 

 

Bendix Hügelmann is an all-round-talent in the strategic communications and public and corporate affairs. In addition to his research, he is working as an independent, non-partisan political consultant. Through his business he advances findings from academia on causes and effects of social media communication into the practitioners realm. Bendix holds a PhD from the University of Hamburg, where he focused his research on the effects of social media and digital communications in political decision making. He has professional experience as a consultant in different areas and founded his own company ’’People on the Hill’’ in 2022.

 

 

Moderator:

David Patrician is an American moderator/journalist currently based in Hamburg, Germany. He came to Germany on a Fulbright Journalism Scholarship and has reported for a variety of media outlets (i.e. Voice of America, Deutsche Welle, N-tv, RTL Nord and the Hamburger Abendblatt). In addition, he has moderated numerous international events and conferences (i.e. the TEDxFulbright in Frankfurt, the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue and the Open Science Conference).  From 2012 – 2022, David was the Hamburg regional coordinator for the Fulbright Alumni Association.  In 2022, he received the Amerigo Media Award, presented by ENAM (European Network of American Alumni Associations).
